Development of the inflammatory response to Freund’s adjuvant in the posterior non-injected paw (a) and injected paw (b). Adjuvant arthritis was induced by injection of 0.1 ml of Freund’s adjuvant (inactivated M. tuberculosis) into the left hind paw. The concentrations of the injected suspension were 5.0 mg ml−1 for polyarthritis induction and 1.0 mg ml−1 for monoarthritis induction, as described in the “Methods” section. The volume of the paws was monitored daily by plethysmography and the results are expressed as the increase in paw volume. Each point represents the mean ± SE of the mean of 3–4 animals. *p < 0.05 indicates statistical difference from the controls and #p < 0.05 from the monoarthritic condition
