ALR (a) and ALR^A131K (b) activities were assayed for 5 min at the indicated temperatures and pH 7.0 (MES buffer) using 20 mM l-alanine as the substrate with and without 1 mM acetate. For ALR, the maximum rates with and without acetate were 317 ± 5.72 and 178 ± 2.04 μmol/min mg, respectively (n = 3).
