Roles of monocytes in the Cn pathogenesis. Upon infection, monocytes internalize and kill the Cn. However, Cn could also proliferate in the monocytes and escape the monocytes via the host cell lysis or non-lytic exocytosis. It is speculated that monocyte may also work as Trojan horse in the Cn brain dissemination.
