We distinguished five different categories: false-positives, which were 100% identical to sequences within the Rm1021 genome; polymorphic sequences, which had different nucleotide sequences but encoded the same protein sequence; orthologous sequences, which displayed >85% identity to S. meliloti 1021 proteins; divergent sequences, corresponding to genes present in the databases but displaying significant identity to sequences from bacteria other than Rm1021; and orphan sequences, not found in the databases.
