  1. The Mann Whitney t-test was used for the statistical comparison and the p-value is given for each statistical comparison (significant differences are marked in bold). Thrombophlebitis was defined as clinical signs of a local inflammatory reaction corresponding to a subcutaneous vein of the affected limb, infection means clinical and laboratory evidence for a local infection corresponding to the affected the lower limb, and sterile inflammation means a condition with local sterile inflammation of the affected limb (e.g. a ruptured Baker’s cyst).
